Choreographer and dancer Marta Ruiz is the director of Adra Danza, an organization involved in performing arts and contemporary dance projects for the past 25 years.
The Cultural Association Adra seeks to generate pedagogic and academic processes for people that have no access to arts and dance, offering an academic possibility emphasized in community. Equally, the association aims to approach vulnerable communities through the discourse of the body and cultural awareness, cultivating a feeling of appreciation of one’s and other people’s life, based on the reality expressed by the body itself. These are the realities and attitudes affected by a national context that allow us to express ourselves in a creative way through dance methods and techniques that involve different participants and populations.
One of the Association’s tasks is the development of research, promotion and dissemination processes in the field of performing arts, dance language and social imaginary as an element that showcases the social transformations; at the same time, creating, preparing and putting in stage works and programmes based on body languages, the arts of movement, expression and communication, with the ultimate goal of getting to know better and improving the environment and the quality of life of all human beings.
ADRA aspires to build a permanent centre that will promote thinking, training, creation, research and dissemination around the subject of the body, the movements and the arts, especially dance, a perception of life as a set of forces in constant tension, of delicate and precarious balances that offer a different sense of reality and increase the versatility of symbolic constructions, in a mental openness of the changes. Balance is never about total stability, it is always a delicate play of opposition forces. It is about creating meeting places that have to do with our history, that contribute to the primary purpose of creating an open, deep and generous concept of life every day, a purpose that is reflected to the community in general. MARTA RUIZ will discuss some of the most relevant projects that took place in Colombia and were targeted at rescuing traditional dances in small communities throughout the country and more specifically in the Amazon.
